Research* shows more than three quarters (76%) of women admit they don’t carry out an Allergy Alert Test before they colour their hair for a special occasion, and so have no way of knowing if they could face an unexpected reaction to the hair colorant they use.

Limited understanding of how allergy works could be driving this, because many people don’t know that allergies build-up over time, so they don’t realise how important it is to carry out an Allergy Alert Test every time they colour their hair, 48 hours in advance, even if they have used a product before.

“The most important thing for me is that my clients love their final look – a new cut and colour can transform the way you feel about yourself and give you a real boost. However, I do also believe that my clients should ensure they have an Allergy Alert Test 48 hours in advance of having their hair coloured.”

Michael Douglas

Michael Douglas has been a hairdresser for 23 years and has had clients that have included everyone from Michael Caine and Kate Moss to Danni Minogue and Davina McCall. During the ‘90s and ‘00s, he worked on fashion weeks in London, Paris, Milan and New York and styled the supermodels and celebrities for shows and shoots:

“If you want party-perfect hair this Christmas, the key is to prepare in advance, and if you’re thinking of colouring your hair, deep condition it two weeks before to help ensure you get an even colour. Whether you’re colouring your hair in the salon or at home, remember you must carry out an Allergy Alert Test 48 hours in advance, so talk to your stylist or follow the instructions on the pack at home.”

Jo HansfordJo Hansford is one of the leading hair colourists in the UK, renowned for her colour correction work. Her Mayfair salon has an extensive international client base and is favoured by many Royals, top celebrities and high profile individuals including Elizabeth Hurley, Georgia Jagger and Erin O'Connor.

“When thinking about a new shade of hair colour, you need to consider several factors such as skin tone and eye colour, as well as the condition of the hair and the level of maintenance required. It is also essential to know what products have been used before on the client to prevent any adverse reactions. Clients can build up an allergy to hair colour over time even if they have never experienced a reaction in the past. Therefore, it is always essential to perform an Allergy Alert Test 48 hours beforehand.”

“The pony tail is a simple but important trend for Autumn/Winter, and a sleek up-do is great for showing off shine and colour. My advice is to choose warmer shades this season to compensate for flat winter light and duller complexions. If you are thinking about colouring your hair, make sure you carry out an Allergy Alert Test 48 hours in advance each and every time, whether at home or in the salon.”

“If you’re colouring your hair in the salon, the most important part is your personal consultation with your stylist – you need to discuss the colour you want and have an Allergy Alert Test at least 48 hours in advance. You can also use this time to understand what will suit you best, and whether your desired look is actually achievable. Your haircut may need to be adapted to complement the colour change, so if need be, book in a haircut simultaneously to get a real wow-factor.”
